The Sound of Hearts Returning
One of my team members and I were discussing the upcoming visit of one of my favorite songwriters, Brenton Brown. She commented that she had pondered the lyrics in his song Hosanna (Praise is Rising). The line in Verse 2 says "Hear the sound of hearts returning to You". On the surface this could seem like a convenient lyric that matches the meter of the song well, but may not mean much. However as I reflect on it more an more I think it's an amazing thought...
Here's the question; What is the sound of hearts returning to the Lord? What are the sounds of people returning to God? Weeping? Cheering? Singing? Running? OK, I know running is a verb, but what are the sounds associated with running full clip to a loved one?
What did the father of the prodigal hear as his son returned to him? His own tearful utterings? Shouts of joy? His son calling from afar off?
It's amazing to think of the sounds in heaven as people repent and return. Can you imagine the sound of your favorite baseball stadium being shamed by the roar of the angels rejoicing over a repentant heart? It must be an amazing, awe-inspiring and fearful sound. At once delicate and fragile, while at the same time coarse, jubilant, unrestricted.
Can we make those sounds occur as we respond quietly without a show of heroic athletic prowess? Can the plaster get shaken off the walls of the temple with the thunderous joy of the heavenly hosts? I'd like to think so.
