Christmas Time is Here

Christmas Time is Here

I love Christmas time. I don't know many people that don't love it, but I'm in the top 5% for sure. Case in point, I've had Christmas music playing nearly 24/7 since the first of October. Imagine the looks I get as I pull up to the drive-thru window with Christmas songs blasting three weeks before Halloween. So, yeah I'm a fan.

I have to admit though, that many times, I'm a fan of Christmas as an institution, and not for its true meaning. In fact, it struck me as I was playing the super-secret Christmas Eve set list songs for my fiance, and she started crying, that she was experiencing the meaning of the song while I was hearing cool songs with great arrangements. She was hearing the words, and she was touched by them.

I've had a mental picture in my head about that moment for a few weeks now, and it has struck me every time I've listened to that song that I need to be aware, that even Christian songs sung at Christmas can become so much a distraction. We can turn the radio off because we don't like so-and-so's version of a song. But, may we be challenged to listen to the meanings of the songs that focus on the most amazing event to ever touch the earth.
